We’re moving in a couple weeks (the first time since I was 9 years old), and I’ve been going through my library of 3000+ books, choosing the books that I could bear to part with and NOT have to pack to move. Which made me wonder…
When’s the last time you weeded out your library? Do you regularly keep it pared down to your reading essentials? Or does it blossom into something out of control the minute you turn your back, like a garden after a Spring rain?
Or do you simply not get rid of books? At all? (This would have described me for most of my life, by the way.)
And–when you DO weed out books from your collection (assuming that you do) …what do you do with them? Throw them away (gasp)? Donate them to a charity or used bookstore? SELL them to a used bookstore? Trade them on Paperback Book Swap or some other exchange program?
I usually go through my books every couple of years or so. I hate getting rid of books but if I don't weed them out, I'd run out of room. If I had a choice I'd never get rid of any book but since that's not an option lol. I never get rid of very many though when I go through them. A bag maybe.
I either donate them or trade them in at my local used bookstore. I never ever throw a book away unless it's damage beyond repair, and since we all love books here this is a very rare event. All of our books are well taken care of, but there is the occasional accident heh.

I hate not keeping books either but I sometimes do donate them or give them away on my blog. Like you, it's usually a small bag or so, not anything crazy.
getting rid of them doesn't exist in my house. LOL!

Novelinsights - LOL funny you should mention that. Was watching Castle on Monday and she took his book in the bath and I'm telling my husband oh no look she's getting it wet and there's bubble all over it. Needless to say I don't take books in the bath lol.
Seriously - I can't bear to part with books. What kills me is when Borders or BN takes books that didn't sell, tear off the cover, and throw them in recycling. It's like cold blooded murder.
I could never throw away a book either. That would be so sad. I once found my husband had thrown in the recycle bin and immediately took it to Goodwill.
Here's my answer...

I can't throw books away either. I don't seem to have a problem with getting books to a new home after I have read them, but the problem is the number coming into my house is greater than the number going out.
I get rid of the ones that I absolutely don’t like, the ones that I rate as “Toss” in reviews. I tend to keep books that are of literary artistry.
Hmmm. Accidents don't befall my books. Here is mine
moving is the worst...the boxes of books are so heavy! And if you're paying someone, that's expensive! but just think of the new space your new home will have, just waiting to be filled up!
Accident - I had the dog eat a few books once. I was not happy.
I have to go through my books every so often, too. We just don't have the room for the three of to keep every book we get.
Holy smokes! You do keep books! My future, if it turns out like I wish, will be a nomadic life. I keep no books, even the ones I purchase head to a new home as soon as I am done.
Ugh...should have paid more attention to the different print.
Sorry! :)
