I've been hearing such good things about this series I picked it up the other day.

Weekend Roundup

So we headed up to camp on Friday to bring the trailer home for the season. We still have the tarps and tent to take down so camp isn't fully closed yet. As we were taking the tent trailer down I grabbed a flap of tent by the bed to lift up and dang near got a handful of bat! Once I got over the shock of almost grabbing him, I started taking pictures with my phone until he woke up enough to fly away. He was so cute!

Saturday I stayed home while my honey worked and watched the Ducks stomp all over Cal in football. Since the game was such a good one, our friends decided they had to have a party. So I spend my evening over there hanging out with good friends and drinks all evening.

I went on my usual Sunday walk today and it was a shorter one but nice. I'm not sure what the plans on for the rest of the day today, my honey is fixing the youngest kidlet's computer. I really should stay home and get some stuff down around here. I am kind of tired today after staying up so late last night.

So onto some book stuff now. The past few days I've received some lovely blog awards from various folks. I love getting awards and all the warm fuzzies that come with them.

My Thoughts:

This was a quick read for me, taking only a few hours of my afternoon. For the most part it was an enjoyable afternoon read considering the subject is such a difficult one to read about. I do think it's an important subject however. To see how easily one goes from just trying to lose a few pounds to not recognizing themselves in the mirror. It was sad to see Beth change so drastically in such a short time frame. Hard to see how the disease crawled it's way into her life and took control of her.

The book itself was good, if a bit rushed. I would have liked to spend more time with the characters and the storyline in general, but that's just my personal wants talking. I would recommend the book to people, especially those in the teenage age range. I think it's a subject that should be discussed and read about.

My Thoughts:

I enjoy books about WWII and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's my inability to understand it that keeps me reading book after book.

The first thing I really noticed about this book is it did not read like a non fiction, it read like any fiction novel you would pick up off a shelf in a bookstore. Very nice for someone who doesn't care for the slower pace writing that non fiction books often take.

The book shares Michael and Gertruda's journey before, through and after the war. The journey they took was filled with so much heartache and suffering and yet they made it through. I felt so sad for the little boy who lost his parents at such a young age. We also got to me so many other people involved or directly affected by the war. It made for an enthralling yet difficult read.

Gertruda's Oath is an amazingly, heartbreaking tale to read. What a truly outstanding, loving, strong, woman she was. To give up so much for the love of a boy and the oath she gave his mother, is remarkable.

I am glad I got the opportunity to read this book and learn about Gertruda and Michael. It's a story that will stay with me for a long time to come and I would recommend reading it.

What’s the saddest book you’ve read recently?


This is the perfect question this week for me. I am currently reading Gertruda's Oath and it's about the Holocaust. The story revolves around a nanny and her charge and of their bond and survival, and how their lives were during and after WWII. I'm only a hundred or so pages in so I don't know how it all ends but it's a Non Fiction which takes an already sad subject and makes it worse knowing the subjects of your book were actually there experiencing it all.

My Thoughts:

This was a wonderful, dark, Gothic mystery and I loved it! I can't wait to read book 2 when it comes out. I want to see how this story unfolds as Lia moves on to her next stop in her journey. I enjoyed how Michelle's storyline is pitting sibling against sibling in a race between good and evil. She has a unique take on this particular storyline.

The era in which this story is told is what really makes the story work. I'm not sure it would work at all in any other era or at least not nearly as well. I was pulled into a dark, cold, dreary world where the buildings are old and the cold seeps in no matter where you roam. Michelle did an awesome job of creating the world in which her story is told. I could see the rooms of the sprawling estate and it's grounds, the carriages they rode to town in, the lake, I could almost feel the rushing water. I can picture how the town looks and feels. I love it when story comes to life like that for me.

The story weaves through your mind creating a visual of a world I can't wait to go back to. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes the feel of a dark, Gothic book full of mystery and intrigue.

Weekend Roundup

This week has been pretty eventful.

I participated in my first BBAW and I had a lot of fun with it. I hope to participate more next year now that I know what to expect from it. There are so many great blogs and blogger's out there and I'm loving getting to meet new people.

My mom has moved a couple hours away to live with my grandma, who needs to have someone around to help her out. So my hubby went over and helped out a bit on Friday while I was at work.

Saturday had to have been the best relaxing day ever. I got up showered, put on another pair of PJ's and then proceeded to watch the Ducks football game and read a book. It doesn't get much better than that. Then my friend came and picked my and the kids up and we spent the evening over at their house watching the UFC fight that was on. A bunch of us were there it was an evening full of laughs and good times.

Went on my usual Sunday walk this morning. We did a longer walk so it took a bit longer. My friend mentioned a soup she makes and it sounded so good, I had to run to the store and get the stuff to make it for home tonight. My house now smells yummy with all the fresh veggies simmering on my stove.

The rest of my day I plan to just lounge around and catch up on blogs and read some more of Prophecy of The Sisters.

My Thoughts:

Wow what an amazing book. It was full of twists and turns and what struck me as interesting is the main character is as messed up as the bad guy is. The story deals with cutting, Munchausen's, alcohol abuse, jealousies, family dysfunctions, among other afflictions through out. But in the mist of all of the crud going on there is a great mystery to solve and Gillian told the story wonderfully.

The book pulled me in quickly and didn't let me off until the last page. All in all I would have to give this two thumbs up and I look forward to reading her newest novel soon.

I've had so much fun over the last 5 months of blogging and my blog is starting to get more traffic. So I hope to make new book blogging friends. I'm shy in nature so it isn't easy for me but I plan to make more of an effort.

Finally got it shortened down to less than 50 words. That was a lot harder to do that I thought it would be.

Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock.

I Listened to this on audiobook and it just plain entertained me. A football loving teenage girl, the hunky opposing teams quarterback, a summer bailing hay. It was an all around pleasing read for me. A great change of pace from what I have been reading recently

The Man Who Loved Books Too Much - Allison Hoover Bartlett

Immersing the reader in a rich, wide world of literary obsession, Bartlett looks at the history of book passion, collection, and theft through the ages, to examine the craving that makes some people willing to stop at nothing to possess the books they love.

My Thoughts:

I don't normally read Non-Fiction books mostly because the writing style is so much different than a fiction book and is often times a slower read. This one was no different for me. With that said however I actually really liked this book even if It took me longer to get through.

I found all the rare book information fascinating and I'm not sure I'll ever look at a book the same again. I also learned a lot of interesting stuff, stuff I would have never given a second thought too before reading this book.

I found Gilkey to be an interesting sort of fellow, even though he is the thief in question. I, like Allison, found myself wondering what made him tick. What compelled him to perform all these acts of thievery just to obtain this book or that book. In the end I don't think I can really understand why he does what he does because I'm not him. Part of me feels sad for the obsession that must drive him to do these thing but at the same time I also hate him for his selfishness in thinking he deserves to have these books at whatever cost.

In the end I think Allison did a wonderful job on this book. I would recommend this to anyone who has a love for books, it really was an informative read.

In Celebration of BBAW - A Giveaway

Last weekend I took my daughter to an author book signing at a local bookstore. Patrick Carman was in town talking at area schools and held a signing in the evening.

I thought with BBAW coming this week, it would be a perfect time to host a giveaway. I picked up the first book in his Atherton series, The House of Power.
Patrick was even nice enough to autograph it for me.

Well I just finished The Man Who Loved Books Too Much so I am in between and haven't decided what I am reading next. I might read my RIP reading challenge short story for a couple days before choosing.
