The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden) - Julie Kagawa (Netgalley)
Synopsis:
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die
or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
My Thoughts:
I became a fan of Julie when I read her Iron Fey series so I had to read this one even though I'm a bit wore out of Vampire books. Man I was not disappointed at all! Julie gave me Vampires. Real honest to goodness, bloodsucking, vicious vampires. Yet she still managed to make me not hate them. I acutally feel sorry for some of them. It's amazing how that worked out.
Allison is a fantastic character. Growing up in the Fringe hating Vampires and everything they stood for. Until that fateful night she had to make the choice, Die or become one of them. Watching Allison struggle with her new life was hard at times. I wanted to gather in my arms and tell her it would be alright. I was cheering her along while every time she let her humanity take over her blood lust. Kanin, Allison's sire is a character I hope to get to know more about. He could've killed her twice to be exact but he gave her a choice. I have this sneaking suspicion he's retained a good portion of this humanity as well. Guess at this point I can't leave out Jackel. Jackel is set up to be the perfect bad guy. Another of Kanin's creations. Only this one has no soul. Should make for some interesting reading in the next book.
Then came Zeke. Raise mostly by the preacher, Jeb. Zeke is caring, strong , passionate, someone who take the ills of the world all on their shoulders. I loved him almost instantly. Jeb I could never make my mind up about him. Even as the book lies finished, I still can't decide how I feel about him. Caleb oh my goodness this little boy stole my heart. There are a few more characters floating around but out of this bunch, Caleb was my favorite. Maybe its the mother in me but I just wanted to hold him close and protect him from all the bad.
By far this has been one of my top reads to date this year.

I thought of you when this book came out. After all our chats on the Iron Fey series, which bad me still has to get through Iron Knight. :) So glad you enjoyed it!
I loved Kanin so much! He was probably my favorite character and I can't wait to learn more about his history in future books-he sure has some stories to tell.
